A new survey by Great Place to Work reveals growing unease among India’s workforce, linking rising AI adoption and automation fears to increasing job insecurity and shifting career choices.

A growing number of young professionals in India fear that artificial intelligence could soon outpace their skills and take over their jobs, according to a new workplace survey by Great Place to Work titled "Voice of India on Artificial Intelligence."
The study found that nearly half of India’s millennials believe AI could replace them within the next five years, reflecting growing unease as automation becomes more embedded in daily work.

Among millennials, 49% said they worry about job loss due to AI, with about a quarter viewing it as highly likely and another 26% seeing a moderate risk. Gen Z workers showed similar apprehension, with 45% expressing concern.
The number drops to 35% among Gen X and older employees, suggesting that younger professionals, who work more closely with technology, feel more vulnerable than their senior counterparts.
Across career levels, between 42% and 58% of respondents said they share similar worries, showing that the anxiety is widespread and not confined to any one demographic.
The report also links this fear to shifting career decisions. Among employees who think AI could replace their roles, nearly 40% are either planning or actively searching for new jobs.
Another 20–28% intend to leave but have not yet started looking, while around 4–7% are already exploring options. Many others said they want to move on but are unable to at present.
Experts note that this trend of “quiet churn” reflects how uncertainty around technology adoption can undermine confidence and long-term career planning.
The study highlights that two out of three employees report their organizations are already using AI at an intermediate or advanced level.
Around 38% said their companies are still in pilot stages, while only 7% have yet to begin using AI.
The IT sector leads AI integration, with 38% of firms reporting extensive use, followed by financial services (32%) and professional services (29%).
Sectors such as manufacturing, retail, and hospitality are catching up, while nonprofits show the slowest adoption at 15%.

About 60% of the people who answered said they get AI training at work, and more than half said they have access to tools, resources, or clear rules for how to use AI responsibly.
The report emphasizes that leadership plays a key role in shaping employee trust. Where managers explain the purpose of AI and offer learning support, workers are more likely to view the technology positively.
While AI is transforming how people work, the study concludes that its real impact will depend on whether employees trust their leaders as much as the technology itself.
