The initiative aims to boost academic standards, attract global faculty, and provide Indian students access to world-class education within the country, fostering international collaboration and cultural exchange.
The Maharashtra government will issue Letters of Intent (LOIs) on June 14 to five leading international universities under the “Mumbai Rising — Creating an International Education City” initiative.
The ceremony will be held at noon at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai.
The universities invited to establish campuses in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai are the University of Aberdeen, the University of York, the University of Western Australia, the Illinois Institute of Technology, and the Istituto Europeo di Design (IED).
Led by the state government with support from CIDCO, the project aims to set up an International Education City near the Navi Mumbai International Airport.
Spread across a five-kilometer radius, the education hub will be the first of its kind in India to host campuses of global institutions, giving Indian students access to world-class education without going abroad.
Officials said the initiative is expected to raise academic standards and foster collaboration between Indian and international students and faculty.
“The International Education City will help bring global education to our doorstep and create opportunities for students from across India,” a government official said.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan will be the chief guest at the event.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, and Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil are also expected to attend.
