Karnataka gets 450 more MBBS seats for 2025-26 academic year

Karnataka will see a significant rise in medical education capacity as the National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved 450 additional MBBS seats for the 2025-26 academic year.

Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash R Patil announced the development, adding that for the first time, government medical colleges in the state will introduce a 15% NRI quota. Each NRI seat will carry a fee of ₹25 lakh.

"This will help government medical colleges become financially more self-reliant rather than depending heavily on state grants," said Patil.

The new seats will be distributed across government colleges in Bengaluru, Mysuru, Belagavi, Kalaburagi, Chikkaballapura, Hassan, Raichur, and Vijayanagara, with each receiving 50 seats.

The medical college run by Mooru Savita Mutt in Hubballi has also been granted 50 seats. With the expansion, Karnataka’s total MBBS capacity has grown from 9,263 to 9,663 seats.

Earlier this year, NMC chairman Abhijit Chandrakant Seth had announced plans to add 8,000 medical seats nationwide.

Following this, Patil submitted Karnataka’s proposal directly to officials in New Delhi, leading to the state’s approval.

Patil highlighted that rising demand for medical education has left many deserving students unable to pay the high fees of private colleges.

He expressed satisfaction that the state’s appeal for more government seats was accepted.

Alongside this announcement, Patil revealed that a Skill Summit, inspired by the Bengaluru Tech Summit, will be organized in November.

A job fair is also planned in Mysuru after the Dasara celebrations, with registrations opening soon. The minister launched the event poster at the gathering.

In addition, a Nursing Summit will take place in October, followed by an international roadshow to promote the upcoming job fair.
