The annual International Day of Education, with this year’s theme “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation,” will explore how education can empower individuals to understand and navigate AI, ensuring human control while guiding its development toward beneficial outcomes.
The International Day of Education, observed annually on Jan 24, underscores the critical role of education in fostering peace and development globally.
Needless to say, only education can change the world. An educated mind can teach many as it is better than an empty one. The only weapon to fight injustice is Education.
Established by the United Nations General Assembly on December 3, 2018, through resolution 73/25, this day aims to highlight education's power in achieving global objectives and building a better future.
Nigeria co-wrote this initiative alongside 58 other countries, reflecting a strong global commitment to ensuring equitable, high-quality education for all. The annual observance is led by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the United Nations (UN)’s education agency coordinates worldwide celebrations and educational activities.
Theme of 2025: AI and Education
In 2025, the International Day of Education marks its seventh year, focusing on the theme "AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation." This theme addresses the impact of Artificial Intelligence and technology on education, emphasizing the need for educational systems to help individuals understand, adapt to, and influence these rapid technological changes. It highlights the importance of maintaining human agency as AI technologies continue to evolve and integrate into various aspects of life.
The official theme statement elaborates, "As computer and AI-driven systems become more sophisticated, the boundaries between human intention and machine-driven action often blur, raising critical questions about how to preserve, redefine, and, ideally, elevate human agency in an age of technological acceleration." This statement captures the essence of the ongoing dialogue on how education can play a pivotal role in ensuring that technological advancements do not undermine human decision-making and autonomy.
Promoting peace and development
The International Day of Education also serves as a platform to promote peace and development. Education is seen as a key driver for creating peaceful and resilient societies, supporting Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4), which aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. The day calls for collaborative efforts from governments, organizations, businesses, and individuals to make education accessible to everyone, thus contributing to achieving other global targets.
Critical thinking and adaptability
With the increasing influence of AI, the 2025 theme highlights the necessity for educational systems worldwide to foster critical thinking and adaptability among learners. By focusing on preserving human agency, the event advocates for an educational approach that not only adapts to technological advancements but also empowers individuals to shape these changes consciously. This approach is crucial for building a future where technology enhances human capabilities rather than diminishes them.
