India’s first private AI-augmented university opens in Uttar Pradesh

India’s first privately established artificial intelligence-augmented multidisciplinary university has opened its doors in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath formally inaugurating the institution set up by Chandigarh University.

Positioned as a major milestone for the state’s digital transformation, the university aims to enhance technical education and equip students with industry-ready AI skills.

The Uttar Pradesh government is integrating artificial intelligence across multiple sectors, including education, agriculture, security, and administration.

As part of this push, the state is rolling out the AI Pragya scheme, which aims to train 10 lakh individuals in AI, data analytics, machine learning, and cybersecurity.

Beneficiaries include students, teachers, government employees, panchayat leaders, and farmers.

“The training is being carried out in collaboration with Microsoft, Intel, Google, and Guvi,” an official statement said. “The goal is to train 1.5 lakh people every month.”

In law enforcement, the Safe City Project has introduced AI-enabled systems in 17 city corporations.

These include CCTV cameras with facial recognition, automatic number plate readers, SOS alert systems, and a direct link to the 112 emergency helpline and police control rooms.

The agriculture sector is also witnessing a tech-driven overhaul under the ₹4,000 crore UP-AGRIS project, which is supported by the World Bank.

The initiative is offering AI-powered tools to 10 lakh farmers, including smart irrigation solutions, drone-assisted land mapping, and pest detection technologies.

It has also integrated 10,000 women’s self-help groups and is connecting farmer-producer organizations to digital marketplaces.

In addition, the Revenue Department is deploying AI and satellite imaging to manage land records and carry out digital mapping at the village level, making land allocation and distribution more efficient.

AI is being tapped in other departments as well. A system called ‘Jarvis’ is now operational in 70 prisons to monitor inmate activities.

The Geology and Mining Department has adopted AI and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies for improved supervision of mining areas.
