Indian universities and higher education institutions are set to introduce biannual admissions, similar to their international counterparts, following approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC), according to UGC chairman M Jagadesh Kumar.
Starting from the 2024-25 academic year, the two admission cycles will be conducted in July-August and January-February.

Kumar highlighted that this change will be beneficial for students who may have missed the July-August admission cycle due to delayed board results, health concerns, or personal circumstances.
Multiple Advantages
Kumar emphasized that biannual admissions will keep students motivated as they won't have to wait a full year for the next admission cycle if they miss the current one.
Additionally, this system will allow industries to conduct campus recruitments twice a year, thereby enhancing job prospects for graduates.
He further explained that biannual admissions will facilitate better resource planning for higher education institutes (HEIs), including faculty, labs, classrooms, and support services, leading to improved operational efficiency within the university.
"Global universities already implement a biannual admission system. If Indian HEIs adopt this model, it will boost their international collaborations and student exchanges, thereby improving our global competitiveness and aligning us with international educational standards," stated Kumar.
He added that for a successful transition to biannual admissions, HEIs need to focus on administrative details, effective resource planning, and providing seamless support systems for students admitted at different times of the year.
The effectiveness of biannual admissions can only be maximized when faculty members, staff, and students are adequately prepared for the transition.
Voluntary Adoption
Jagadesh Kumar clarified that the adoption of biannual admissions is not mandatory. Institutions with the necessary infrastructure and teaching faculty can avail of this opportunity.
"Biannual admissions are not compulsory for HEIs. It's an option provided by the UGC for HEIs looking to increase their student intake and introduce new programs in emerging fields. To facilitate admissions twice a year, HEIs will need to make appropriate modifications to their institutional regulations," he concluded.
