The courses cover aircraft design, propulsion, vibrations, UAVs, and space mechanics, offering free video lectures and optional certification, with enrollment open until August 15 on the NPTEL platform.
Ten free online courses in aerospace engineering are being offered by premier Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) on the NPTEL platform, with enrollment open until August 15.
The courses, beginning in July, cover topics in flight science, drone design, propulsion, and space mechanics.
Open to students, professionals, and enthusiasts, the courses are free of cost, with a ₹1,000 fee applicable only for those opting for a certification exam.
1. Flight Vehicle Fundamentals (IIT Kanpur): This course serves as an entry point into aerospace science, covering the evolution of flight, aircraft systems, basic aerodynamics, and propulsion. It is structured into ten modules, with two detailed video lectures in each.
Suitable for beginners, it lays the foundation for further learning in aviation and space technology.
The course starts in July, with enrollment open until August 15, and the exam scheduled for October 2025.
2. Introduction to Aircraft Design (IIT Bombay): Focused on conceptual and preliminary aircraft design, this course teaches configuration selection, aerodynamic load calculations, payload and range estimations, and cost analysis.
It also looks at environmental aspects like noise and emission constraints. It is ideal for those looking to enter the aviation industry or pursue advanced studies in aircraft engineering.
3. Elements of Mechanical Vibration (IIT Delhi): This course addresses how vibrations affect mechanical systems such as aircraft and spacecraft. It explains the theoretical background using relatable examples and teaches techniques to analyze and control vibrations in engineering structures.
Though designed with aerospace in mind, it is also useful for professionals in automotive and structural design. The exam is scheduled for Nov 2.
4. Introduction to Airplane Performance (IIT Kanpur): Learners will explore questions like how fast an aircraft can travel, how much it can carry, and what impacts its takeoff distance.
The course links design parameters with flight performance in actual operating conditions, including a look at flight testing methods. The related exam will be held on Sept 21.
5. Aircraft Stability and Control (IIT Kanpur): This course explains how aircraft maintain stability during flight and how engineers design systems to control their motion.
Topics include longitudinal, lateral, and directional stability, trim conditions, and dynamic response. The exam for this course is scheduled for Nov 1.
6. Design of Fixed-Wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (IIT Kanpur): As drone technology becomes increasingly mainstream, this course provides a practical approach to designing fixed-wing UAVs.
It covers aspects such as sizing, performance optimization, stability, and prototyping. The exam date is Sept 21, with enrollment closing Aug 15.
7. UAV Design – Part II (IIT Kanpur): A follow-up to the UAV design course, this advanced offering explores flight simulation, dynamic testing, and fine-tuning prototypes for specific applications.
It is suitable for learners with prior exposure to UAV concepts and those conducting drone-related research.
8. Introduction to Airbreathing Propulsion (IIT Kanpur): This course breaks down the science and design of airbreathing engines such as turbojets and turbofans.
It covers thermodynamic cycles and how propulsion systems integrate into aircraft. The certification exam will be conducted on Oct 26.
9. Applied Computational Fluid Dynamics (IIT Kanpur): Focusing on simulation techniques, this course trains learners in CFD applications for analyzing airflow over aircraft surfaces.
It discusses compressible flows, numerical schemes, and methods for capturing shocks in high-speed environments.
10. Space Flight Mechanics (IIT Kharagpur): Targeting those interested in satellite and interplanetary operations, this course introduces space navigation concepts such as orbital mechanics, central force motion, two- and three-body problems, and Lagrange points. The exam is scheduled for Nov 1.
