IIT Madras launches PREM, SAFE initiatives to strengthen student mental health support

IIT Madras has expanded its student mental health support system by involving parents through a dedicated online session and launching a handbook focused on psychological safety for high-achieving students.

The initiatives were introduced as part of the institute’s week-long observance of World Suicide Prevention Day, which falls on Sept 10. The program aims to strengthen the support available to students by helping families better understand their academic, emotional and mental health needs.

IIT Madras organized PREM, or Parents' Role in Encouraging and Mentoring, on Sept 9, bringing parents into an interactive online discussion on how they can communicate with and support their children during college.

The session was conducted by Dr Yamini Kannapan, Senior Consultant Psychiatrist, Behavioural Science, Kauvery Hospital. It focused on practical ways for parents to understand students’ needs, communicate effectively and support their emotional and psychological well-being.

The institute said the transition to college can be a significant period for both students and their families, making parental support and encouragement an important part of students’ overall well-being.

IIT Madras also introduced SAFE, or Building Psychological Safety for High-Achieving Students, a handbook designed specifically for parents of its students.

Authored by Kannapan based on her experience working with IIT Madras students, the handbook applies psychological principles to practical guidance for parents dealing with the academic and personal pressures faced by high-achieving young people.

"Happiness is a collective responsibility. As an Institute we are continuously evolving methods to reduce stress among our bright children. The PREM and SAFE initiatives are launched for this purpose,” IIT Madras Director V Kamakoti.

The institute has also introduced a Wellness App through the Office of the Dean (Students), allowing students to book confidential counseling appointments with wellness professionals. Students can select professionals according to their preferred language and other requirements.
