IIT Madras launches BS admissions for data science, electronics

IIT Madras has opened admissions for its undergraduate BS programs in data science and electronic systems, offering an alternative path to one of India’s top institutions without requiring the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE).

Applications are now being accepted, with the deadline set for May 20, 2025.

These programs aim to make quality education more accessible, especially for those who might not have a traditional engineering background.

The initiative is designed to reach a broader audience—working professionals, students from non-engineering streams, and underrepresented groups like women in tech.

The admission process is designed to be inclusive. Students who have qualified in JEE Main will be offered direct admission.

Those who haven’t taken the exam can still apply by completing a four-week online preparatory module, followed by an in-person qualifying exam.

"Our goal is to democratise access to IIT-quality education," said IIT Madras Director V Kamakoti.

He highlighted the success of students from the BS data science program, noting, "Three of the top 10 ranks in the GATE 2025 data science and AI paper were claimed by our students, with one even securing the top rank."

Currently, about 38,000 students are enrolled in IIT Madras' online and distance learning programs.

Of this group, approximately 25% are women, and 20% are over the age of 30.

The structure of the BS programs supports learners from a wide range of academic and professional backgrounds.

The data science program is open to students from any discipline who have studied mathematics and English in Class 10.

For the electronic systems program, applicants must have studied physics and mathematics in Classes 11 and 12.

With this flexible and inclusive admission policy, IIT Madras is widening the reach of its educational offerings and redefining what it means to be an IIT student.
