IIT-Kharagpur student Faizan Ahmed was murdered two years ago

23-year-old Faizan Ahmed was found dead in a hostel room in IIT-Kharagpur on October 14, 2022.

Around two years after an IIT-Kharagpur student, Faizan Ahmed, was found dead in a hostel room, a second forensics report has revealed that he was murdered and not died by suicide as initial reports had suggested.

The third-year student studying at India’s premier IIT Kharagpur was stabbed and shot before he died in 2022. The autopsy was conducted for a second time on the order of the Calcutta High Court.

On October 14, 2022, Faizan’s partially decomposed body was found in a hostel room on the IIT Kharagpur campus, not the one allotted to him with initial reports suggesting that he died by suicide.

According to the second forensic report by Dr A K Gupta, a gunshot wound on the upper left side of Faizan’s neck has been found along with a stab wound on the right side of his neck.

The report also mentions that these details were left out by the police in its primary investigation, or during the first postmortem conducted at Midnapore Medical College on 15 October 2022.

The report by the forensic expert, along with the second autopsy was submitted to the court in May this year.
The final report is expected to be submitted before the high court later this month, once the matter is taken up during the hearing.

According to the report, human blood was detected in the student's nail cuttings and hair strands. The second autopsy report has also ruled out death by poisoning, confirming that the 23-year-old mechanical engineering student was murdered.

“His body was lying on the floor of the room with marks on his body. Faizan was last seen on 11 October. His last phone call as per call record data was also made that night. So for at least four days, his body was lying in the room, and no one had any idea,” the lawyer representing Faizan’s parents was quoted as saying at the time.

A senior police official of West Medinipore had also said the case indicated ragging and they can only ascertain the cause of his death after the forensic report comes.

The police found Faizan’s body in a decomposing state, three days after he died. However, no suspects have been identified in the case till now.

In a relentless pursuit to get Faizan justice, his mother moved to the Calcutta High Court in May 2023, seeking the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe his death.

Following this, the court ordered the exhumation of his remains for a second post-mortem examination to “bring out the truth behind his death”.

Faizan, a resident of Tinsukia in Assam, was a victim of ragging on campus, his family has alleged.
