IIT Hyderabad launches AI lab with S&P Global for finance research

The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT-H) has launched an AI Innovation Lab in collaboration with S&P Global, creating a platform for students and faculty to work on real-world challenges involving artificial intelligence and financial applications.

The lab was inaugurated on Oct 7 in the presence of IIT Hyderabad Director Professor B S Murty, S&P Global Managing Director for India Operations Nilam Patel, Senior Director and Hyderabad Operations Site Head Sravanthi Lanka and representatives from both organisations.

The initiative will combine IIT Hyderabad’s academic and artificial intelligence expertise with S&P Global’s industry experience. It is intended to strengthen applied AI research while giving students practical exposure to challenges faced by the financial sector.

Students to work on industry-led AI challenges

The lab will provide students with opportunities to participate in industry-led challenges, workshops, expert interactions and hands-on learning.

Students will also be able to explore financial-sector problems and develop prototype solutions using emerging AI technologies. Selected students and faculty members will have opportunities to participate in collaborative research with S&P Global.

The focus is therefore not limited to classroom-based AI learning. The lab is designed to expose students to how AI technologies can be explored and developed in response to practical industry requirements.

Through projects and interaction with industry professionals, students will also gain experience in applying AI to problems beyond conventional academic settings.

IIT Hyderabad and S&P Global bring academic and industry expertise together

Speaking at the launch, IIT Hyderabad Director Professor B S Murty said AI is creating opportunities across sectors, including finance, and that preparing students to work on real-world problems is an important part of technology education and research.

He said the collaboration would bring together academic expertise and industry experience, allowing students and faculty to explore challenging problems, develop practical solutions and undertake research.

S&P Global Chief People Officer Girish Ganesan said the company aims to help the next generation develop skills needed to work in an AI-enabled environment. The company said the lab would provide students with opportunities to learn, create and gain exposure to practical applications of AI.

Partnership builds on StepForward initiative

The AI Innovation Lab builds on IIT Hyderabad’s existing association with StepForward, an initiative of S&P Global and the S&P Global Foundation focused on workforce readiness and AI education.

IIT Hyderabad is a strategic collaborator for the initiative, which is backed by a $10 million commitment over three years.

The wider collaboration is aimed at strengthening connections between education, industry requirements and the skills needed as artificial intelligence becomes more widely used across sectors.

The new lab gives that partnership a dedicated focus on AI applications in finance, while providing a setting for students and researchers to engage with industry problems.

AI and finance emerging as a specialised area for students

The launch comes as financial-sector organisations increasingly explore artificial intelligence for a range of tasks and workflows. For students, the partnership provides an opportunity to study AI not only as a technical discipline but also through its application to a specific industry.

By combining workshops, industry challenges, expert interaction and mentored research, the lab is expected to give participating students and faculty greater exposure to the process of developing and testing AI-based solutions.

The initiative also adds a finance-focused component to IIT Hyderabad’s broader research and technology ecosystem.
