The new hybrid program, tailored for water sector professionals, offers flexible certification options, advanced training in flood management tools, and support for Assam’s statewide capacity-building initiative.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati is set to offer a new MTech program in Flood and Water Resources Management starting August 2025.
Aimed at professionals in the water sector, the program will be delivered by the Department of Civil Engineering in a hybrid format, combining online lectures with on-campus laboratory sessions and examinations.
The institute announced that applications for the inaugural batch will remain open until July 31. Classes are scheduled to commence on Aug 18.
Designed to support working professionals, the course structure follows a semester-based system with flexible learning pathways.
Participants will engage with topics such as flood risk assessment, hydrological modeling, sustainable water resource management, and climate adaptation. Training will also include tools like GIS, remote sensing, and flood forecasting.
To make the program more accessible, IIT Guwahati has introduced multi-level certification options.
Students can exit at different stages with credentials: a Postgraduate Certificate after four courses, a Postgraduate Diploma after seven, a Master of Science (Engineering) after completing two semesters and ten courses, and the full MTech degree after four semesters and a capstone project.
Candidates who exit midway can re-enroll after a one-year gap to finish the degree.
Eligibility requires a four-year bachelor’s degree in civil or agricultural engineering or related fields, with at least 60% marks or a 6.0 out of 10 CPI, along with one year of relevant work experience. A GATE score is not mandatory for admission.
Graduates will be prepared to work across government bodies, international organizations, consulting firms, and research institutions focused on climate resilience and sustainable water systems.
Earlier this year, IIT Guwahati signed a memorandum of understanding with Assam’s Water Resources Department to nominate 20 engineers annually for the program.
This initiative is part of a broader project supported by the World Bank and spearheaded by the Assam Flood and River Erosion Management Agency (FREMAA).
