IIT Bombay will launch its first international campus in Japan next year through a partnership with Tohoku University, beginning with a PhD program focused on research and innovation.

Expanding its global footprint, the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) is set to open its first overseas campus in Japan through a strategic collaboration with Tohoku University, a prestigious, government-supported institution.
Slated to begin operations next year, the initiative marks IIT Bombay’s entry into the international education arena, following in the footsteps of IIT Delhi’s Abu Dhabi campus and IIT Madras’ venture in Zanzibar.

The partnership will launch with a research-intensive PhD program, with MTech courses expected to follow.
This joint effort is designed to leverage Japan’s advanced technological ecosystem alongside India’s strengths in software and engineering education.
The campus will serve not only as an academic hub but also as a catalyst for deeper bilateral ties.
It aims to foster knowledge exchange, collaborative research, and access to leading innovation networks and industries in Japan.
Planning for the project accelerated after both institutions signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Japan last month.
The collaboration comes at a time when over 1,600 Indian students are already pursuing higher studies in Japan — a number likely to increase with this new development.
Japanese companies have maintained a strong hiring presence at IIT Bombay, and the new campus is expected to strengthen this relationship further.
Initially, the Japan campus will cater exclusively to postgraduate students, with a focus on research and innovation. There are currently no plans to introduce undergraduate programs.
The initiative is seen as a milestone in combining the technological prowess of Japan with Indian academic excellence to unlock new opportunities in education and industry.
