IISc leads as four Indian universities rank in Times Higher Education reputation list 2025

Times Higher Education (THE) has released its World Reputation Rankings for 2025, with several Indian universities making the list.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru stands out, alongside IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, and the new entrant, Shiksha ‘O’ Anusandhan.

Compared to the rankings published in 2023, all the Indian institutes have experienced a decline.

IISc is now ranked between 201-300, down from 101-125. Prior to the 2023 edition, IIT Delhi and IIT Madras were ranked 151–175 and 176–200, respectively, but have now fallen to 201-300.

This year’s newcomer, Shiksha ‘O’ Anusandhan, is also ranked in the 201-300 range.

IIT Bombay, which was ranked 151–175 in the 2023 THE World Reputation Rankings, is no longer included in the list.

The rankings, which highlight the top universities globally based on academic prominence and reputation, were determined using six performance metrics for the first time.

These included research vote count, teaching vote count, research pairwise comparison, teaching pairwise comparison, research voter diversity, and teaching voter diversity.

This year, 300 universities from 38 nations and territories were ranked.

According to THE World Reputation Rankings, Harvard University has maintained its top spot for 14 consecutive years.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Oxford University now share second place.

American universities dominate the rankings, with six institutions in the top 10.

Poland and Malaysia are among the 10 new countries to join the ranking this year.

Additionally, for the first time since 2022, Sub-Saharan Africa has earned recognition for its academic standing.

Portugal, Poland, Malaysia, and Chile are the four new nations that have entered the World Reputation Rankings.
