‘Higher education must serve as a pillar for nation-building’: Kerala Governor Arlekar

Sreenarayana Guru Open University held its first convocation ceremony on Feb 13, where Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar said the institution has ensured that higher education remains accessible beyond barriers of age and physical limitations.

He said the higher education sector must serve as a pillar of nation-building and emphasized that modern curricula should combine professional skills with a commitment to social transformation.

Higher Education Minister R Bindu said the university has enabled continued education for marginalized sections of society.

“Open University is a significant stride towards transforming Kerala into a comprehensive knowledge society. The foundation stone for the university’s permanent headquarters building will be laid very soon,” she said.

Finance Minister KN Balagopal said the university has grown to 76,000 learners and strengthened the higher education landscape by offering both traditional and next-generation courses.

Dairy Development Minister J Chinchu Rani said the institution provides a second opportunity for those whose higher studies were interrupted.

The governor presented degrees to graduates and postgraduates at the ceremony. Vice Chancellor VP Jagathy Raj, Registrar Abhilash Babu, syndicate members, officials, and students were present.
