Gujarat girl who scored 705 in NEET UG fails 12th board examination

In the Gujarat board examinations held in March 2024, the girl did not pass her Chemistry and Physics papers. She sat for the supplementary exams in June but was unable to pass the Physics paper, resulting in a failure in her 12th-grade boards.

After achieving an impressive score of 705 out of 720 in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET UG), the girl from Gujarat failed her Class XII (science) board exam. Recently, she has failed in the supplementary exams as well.

In the board examinations held in March, she did not pass the Chemistry and Physics papers.

She then sat for the June supplementary exams offered by the Gujarat Board, which provide a second chance to candidates who fail up to three papers. She was unable to pass Physics in Class 12, hence she has now failed.

In the supplementary exam, she received a score of 22 marks, just one mark higher than her first attempt in physics.

On her second attempt, she received precisely the passing score of 33 in Chemistry. In the March exam, she had received a mere 31 marks in Chemistry. The results of the supplementary exam seriously question the accuracy of her NEET score.

"This issue cannot be disregarded at a time when the Supreme Court is investigating irregularities in NEET. It is extremely unlikely that a student who fails state board exams will receive one of the top scores on this extremely demanding national medical entrance exam. Investigating the case is unquestionably necessary," said a member of the education fraternity of Gujarat.

Her NEET and Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) science mark sheets, which shared the identical first, middle, and last names, circulated on social media after the announcement of the center- and city-wise NEET UG results. Much attention was drawn to the stark difference between the two results — the NEET score of 705 and the board exam score of only 352 out of 700.

The girl's NEET score was eventually lowered to 700 as a result of a Supreme Court-appointed committee's ruling over one exam question. She is in the top 99.89th percentile overall, in the 99.14th percentile in Chemistry, the 99.14th percentile in Biology, and the 99.89th percentile in Physics based on her NEET score.

A premier medical college would normally offer a free spot to someone with that kind of score. The girl is ineligible for admission because she failed her Class XII examinations.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) administered the controversial NEET UG 2024 to over 24 lakh students at 4,750 centers in 571 locations (including 14 abroad). The results of the NEET UG 2024 were announced on June 4.
