Former Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), Prof. Dhirendra Pal Singh, has been appointed as the new Chancellor of Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai.
The Union Ministry of Education issued the order of his appointment on Friday. Singh has been appointed as the Chancellor of TISS for a period of 5 years.
"In exercise of the powers conferred under Article 23.L of the Memorandum of Association (MoA) & Rules of Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai, the Competent Authority has approved the appointment of Prof. D. P. Singh, former Chairman, University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi, as the new Chancellor, TISS (deemed to be a university), Mumbai, Maharashtra," the official notification read.
He became the chairman of the UGC in 2017 for a period of 5 years. In a career spanning nearly four decades, Singh has held several academic leadership positions in Indian higher education institutions, reported The Indian Express.
He led three universities as Vice-Chancellor—Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi; Dr. H. S. Gour University, Sagar, and Devi Ahilya University in Indore. He also headed National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore, as director.
He has contributed as member (ex officio) of Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE), Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Indian National Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO, RUSA, Implementation Committee of National Education Policy 2020, etc..
