DUSU urges Delhi University to postpone exams amid India-Pakistan tensions

Following the recent escalation in tensions between India and Pakistan, Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) president Ronak Khatri on May 9 urged the university administration to postpone the examinations scheduled to begin on May 13.

In a related development, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has rescheduled its admission tests for May 10 and 11, specifically for students from Jammu and Kashmir, in light of the ongoing situation.

Khatri expressed concern that the deteriorating conditions have sparked panic among students, many of whom are receiving requests from their families to return home.

“Many students who had gone home on preparatory leave are now panicked, and several parents are requesting their children to return home amid the growing tensions,” he said in an official statement.

To address these concerns, DUSU launched two helpline numbers — 73780 22365 and 62686 85067 — to assist students with issues related to accommodation, health, and examination schedules.

“Since the launch of the helplines, we have received multiple requests from students and their families urging the postponement of the upcoming examinations, citing safety concerns and travel difficulties,” reads the statement.

Reiterating his appeal on X (formerly Twitter), Khatri called on the vice chancellor to delay the exams in the interest of student safety.

“Examinations are scheduled to begin on the 13th of May, but the current situation has created anxiety among students and their families. I sincerely urge the vice chancellor of Delhi University to consider postponing the examination dates to ensure the safety and well-being of all students,” he posted.

The surge in hostilities follows Operation Sindoor, a military strike by the Indian Armed Forces on Wednesday targeting terror infrastructure in retaliation for the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam.

Since the operation, Pakistan has reportedly launched several drone and missile attacks — most of which have been intercepted — while intense shelling along the border has caused casualties and heightened fears.
