DU proposes PhD program in Hindu Studies for 2025–26 academic year

The Standing Committee of Delhi University has proposed to launch a PhD program in Hindu Studies in the 2025–2026 academic year.

Originally scheduled to start in the current academic year, the program was postponed, according to the proposal.

Prerna Malhotra, the Centre for Hindu Studies' Joint Director, said that the objective of the project to launch a PhD program in Hindu Studies is to give students more options.

“Our Governing Board has recommended starting a PhD in Hindu Studies, and the matter will be placed before the Academic Council. Students have been approaching the Centre, inquiring about research opportunities, especially those who have already qualified for JRF and NET in Hindu Studies,” said Malhotra.

“As a premier institution, Delhi University is committed to providing such opportunities and advancing research in diverse areas of Hindu Studies,” she added.

The Centre for Hindu Studies may initially provide 10 seats, including those that fall under the relevant supernumerary and reservation categories.

According to the proposal, future seat increases could be dependent on the Center's academic needs and infrastructure.

At its meeting on Dec 27, the DU Academic Council will examine and make a decision regarding the recommendation.

The recommendation will be referred to the Executive Council, the university's highest decision-making body, for approval after the Council has given its consent.

“In continuation of the decision of the Governing Body of the Centre for Hindu Studies taken on June 21, 2024, it was decided to recommend initiating a PhD in Hindu Studies with effect from the academic session 2025-26,” the proposal stated.

The eligibility criteria for the PhD program would be consistent with Delhi University's rules.

Applicants must have a master's degree in Hindu Studies or related subjects with at least 55% marks, as well as JRF/NET qualification or successful completion of the university's PhD eligibility test.

Relaxations for reserved categories will be offered in accordance with the PhD Information Bulletin.

Faculty with expertise in Hindu Studies from the university's affiliated departments and colleges who have shown interest will supervise research until official appointments are made.

Delhi University now only provides a two-year master's program in Hindu Studies.

The Centre for Hindu Studies, which was founded in 2023 with an emphasis on Brahmanical texts, started its first MA batch in Nov 2023.
