The World Health Organization (WHO) has launched CoViNet, a platform designed to streamline and coordinate global expertise and resources for the early detection, monitoring, and assessment of various coronaviruses. While primarily focusing on SARS-CoV-2, CoViNet will also assess other coronaviruses like Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), aiming to enhance laboratory capacity and surveillance.
MERS-CoV, a zoonotic virus transmitted between animals and humans, has been linked to infections in dromedary camels across the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia. CoViNet's establishment builds upon the foundation laid by the WHO Covid-19 reference laboratory network, initially formed in January 2020 during the early stages of the pandemic.
The significance of CoViNet lies in addressing the ongoing epidemic and pandemic risks associated with coronaviruses, emphasizing the need for proactive surveillance and response measures. Key features include the participation of 36 labs from 21 countries across all WHO regions, including three Indian labs. CoViNet adopts a comprehensive One Health approach, integrating human, animal, and environmental health perspectives.
The network's objective is to empower WHO Member States with enhanced capabilities for early detection, risk assessment, and response to coronavirus-related health challenges. CoViNet's outcomes will contribute vital data to inform WHO policies and support decision-making, particularly through Technical Advisory Groups on Viral Evolution and Vaccine Composition.
