The revamped mission focuses on climate-resilient infrastructure, improved public transport, and data-driven governance to enhance urban sustainability and service delivery

The Centre has announced the launch of Smart Cities Mission 2.0, marking a renewed push to strengthen urban local bodies and improve the quality of life in Indian cities. Building on the experience of the earlier phase, the new iteration places greater emphasis on climate resilience, efficient mobility, and the use of data and technology in municipal governance.
A key focus of Smart Cities 2.0 is the development of climate-resilient infrastructure to help cities adapt to challenges such as heatwaves, flooding, and extreme weather events. Urban planning under the mission will prioritize sustainable construction, green spaces, water management, and energy-efficient systems.

The mission also highlights the expansion and modernization of public transport systems, including electric buses, integrated mobility solutions, and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure. These measures aim to reduce congestion, lower emissions, and promote inclusive and affordable urban mobility.
Another major component is data-driven governance at the municipal level. Cities will be encouraged to adopt digital platforms, real-time monitoring systems, and analytics-based decision-making to improve service delivery in areas such as waste management, water supply, traffic control, and public safety. Enhanced citizen engagement through digital interfaces is also a key objective.
Experts note that Smart Cities Mission 2.0 strengthens the role of urban local bodies by improving institutional capacity, financial sustainability, and planning autonomy. However, effective implementation will require coordination between central, state, and local governments, along with capacity building at the municipal level.
Overall, Smart Cities 2.0 represents a significant step toward sustainable and citizen-centric urban development. By empowering urban local bodies with modern infrastructure and governance tools, the mission aims to build resilient, inclusive, and well-governed cities for the future.
