Tamil Nadu opposes three-language policy in schools under NEP 2020

The Centre has refused to release funds for Samagra Shiksha India’s maritime infrastructure project in Tamil Nadu as the state has refused to implement the three-language policy as per the NEP 2020.

Tamil and English are the two official languages in Tamil Nadu.

About the goal of the Three-Language Policy: national cohesion and promotion of multilingualism

Students have to learn three languages: Two have to be Indian natives. Language selection by states and students.

Changes in Policy

1948–1949 University Education Commission presided over by Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan: The three-language formula for school instruction grew out of the recommendations of the commission.

Commission on Kothari (1964–66): formally proposed the formula in three languages.

Inclusion in educational policies Incorporated in NEP 1968. Three-language formula retained in NEP 1986, 1992. NEP 2020 gives more flexibility to three-language formula. Hindi not specifically mentioned; two regional languages are.
