An Active-Cooled Scramjet Subscale Combustor has been successfully ground tested by DRDO for more than a thousand seconds
Overview of Hypersonic Propulsion Technology This advanced domain is dedicated to facilitating vehicles to achieve velocities surpassing Mach 5 (five times the speed of sound). It finds its primary applications in hypersonic cruise missiles and sophisticated aerospace systems.
Key Characteristics of Hypersonic Propulsion Technology Air-Breathing Engines:
Hypersonic vehicles utilize Scramjet (Supersonic Combustion Ramjet) Engines, which depend on atmospheric oxygen for combustion rather than carrying oxidizers onboard.
This design enhances their efficiency for prolonged high-speed travel. Scramjet (Supersonic Combustion Ramjet) Engine
A Scramjet is an air-breathing engine that functions effectively at hypersonic speeds by permitting the supersonic combustion of air.
The main distinction from a Ramjet is that in a Ramjet, air decelerates to subsonic speeds prior to combustion, whereas in a Scramjet, air remains supersonic throughout the process, enabling greater speeds.
The operational principle involves utilizing the vehicle’s forward motion to compress incoming air without the need for a rotating compressor. India has become the fourth nation, following the USA, Russia, and China, to successfully conduct flight testing of a Scramjet engine.
Importance of the Scramjet Engine Test Validation of Long-Duration Supersonic Combustion:
This test validates the design and efficiency of the scramjet combustor, confirming its capability for sustained high-speed flight.
It builds upon a previous 120-second test conducted in January, showcasing progressive advancements.
Fortifying India’s Hypersonic Missile Program: Scramjet engines facilitate air-breathing propulsion, diminishing dependence on onboard oxygen and improving missile range.
The successful test lays the groundwork for comprehensive flight testing of hypersonic cruise missiles.
