Ten thousand Mycobacterium TB genomes have been sequenced by India

The program is part of the Dare2eraD TB program (Data Driven Research to Eradicate TB), which was launched in March 2022 and focuses on data-driven research to eradicate TB.

About the DARE2ERAD TB program, which is managed by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) of the Ministry of Science and Technology.

The Indian Tuberculosis Genomic Surveillance Consortium (InTGS) is an essential component of the endeavor. More than 32,000 TB isolates will be sequenced in an effort to identify mutations that cause medication resistance and improve treatment outcomes.

India has the highest TB burden in the world, accounting for 27% of all TB cases globally. In 2022, 331,000 deaths—or 23 deaths per 100,000 people—are projected.

Crucial Actions India Is Taking To Put an End To TB

By 2025, the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP), now known as the Revised National Tuberculosis Control Program (RNTCP), seeks to eradicate tuberculosis (TB).

Components of the NTEP Program

  • Pradhan Mantri The TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (PMTBMBA) aims to support TB patients and their families.
  • TB patients can receive ₹1,000 per month in financial aid for their nutrition through the Ni-kshay Poshan Yojana (NPY).
  • TB Mukt Panchayat Initiative, Tribal TB Initiative, etc.

TB World Day

  • It is observed annually on March 24.
  • The primary cause of the contagious airborne disease TB is Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
  • There are two types: pulmonary (affecting the lungs) and extrapulmonary (affecting the brain, bones, and lymph nodes).
