The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), decision regarding the implementation of GNSS-based tolling starting May 1, 2025
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has confirmed that there has been no decision to implement GNSS-based tolling starting May 1, 2025. Instead, a barrier-less toll system utilizing Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and FASTag will be launched at select toll plazas.
Overview of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR):
Definition: ANPR employs advanced cameras to capture and interpret vehicle registration plates, facilitating automatic identification without the need for manual processing.
Charging Mechanism:
Charges will be applied based on the recognition of the number plate and the validation of the FASTag. Vehicles will not need to stop at toll plazas.
Violators will receive electronic notices, and failure to pay may result in the suspension of FASTag or penalties in accordance with VAHAN database regulations.
Understanding GNSS and Its Functionality:
Definition: The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is a tolling approach that operates without barriers, utilizing satellite tracking to monitor vehicle movements and determine toll fees based on the distance traveled.
Functionality:
GNSS incorporates GPS or other satellite systems.
Toll fees are automatically deducted from associated bank accounts.
This system eliminates the necessity for toll booths or manual interactions.
Advantages of GNSS and ANPR:
Effortless Travel: Eliminating stops at toll plazas saves time and alleviates congestion.
Minimized Errors: Satellite tracking helps to reduce both human and technical mistakes.
Versatile Payment Options: GNSS supports both prepaid and postpaid payment methods.
Strengthened Enforcement: E-notices and penalties promote adherence to regulations under ANPR.
Enhanced Precision: GNSS provides real-time, distance-based toll calculations, ensuring equitable tolling.
