The 76th anniversary of the adoption of India’s Constitution — significance, celebrations, and continuing relevance

India observes Constitution Day every year on 26 November, marking the historic moment in 1949 when the Constituent Assembly formally adopted the Constitution, laying the foundation of the world’s largest democracy. Celebrated annually since its official notification in 2015, the day serves as a reminder of the transformative journey that led to the creation of a modern, sovereign, and republican India.
Across the country, schools, colleges, universities and government institutions commemorate the day through activities such as reading the Preamble, conducting debates, quizzes, lectures, and special assemblies that highlight the ideals embedded in the Constitution.
These events encourage citizens, especially young students, to reflect on constitutional values—justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity—and understand the responsibilities that come with democratic citizenship.

Government bodies often organise outreach programmes, digital campaigns, and seminars focusing on the evolution of constitutional governance, the challenges of protecting fundamental rights, and the role of institutions in preserving constitutional morality. The celebrations also highlight the vision of the founding leaders and the painstaking deliberations of the Constituent Assembly.
