Pakistan is waging psychological warfare, misuse of social media against India

Pakistan is engaging in psychological warfare by disseminating misinformation on social media to distort India’s military actions and readiness.

Additionally, the PIB fact-checking unit examined widely shared false videos and assertions, purportedly originating from social media accounts in Pakistan.

Mental Combat

Psychological warfare entails the strategic application of propaganda and various psychological tactics to sway the views, feelings, mindsets, and actions of opposing factions.

Propaganda: Disseminating partial or deceptive information to influence public perception or create uncertainty.

Frequently employed to exalt one faction and vilify the opponent.

Fear and Coercion: Menacing, exhibitions of superior strength, or gossip to create fear and weaken morale.

Misinformation and Deceit: Offering inaccurate information to confuse rivals regarding motives, power, or position.

Interference with Decision-Making: Psychological operations (PSYOPs) that disorient leaders or break the chain of command.

Strategies and Instruments

  • Leaflets and Broadcasts: Employed to disseminate propaganda in adversarial areas.
  • Cyber PSYOPs: Manipulating social media, spreading misinformation, or hacking to incite fear or discord.
  • Gossip and Hints: Eroding trust via subtle, difficult-to-detect misinformation.
  • False Flag Operations: Executing activities designed to seem as if they were performed by a different organization.

Modern Applications Beyond the Battlefield

  • Commerce: Forceful advertising or corporate deceit aimed at eroding rivals.
  • Politics: Undermining adversaries, influencing public perception via media.
  • Interpersonal: Manipulating emotions or gaslighting in unhealthy relationships.

Path Forward

The fact-checking team at the Press Information Bureau, PIB Fact Check, has intervened to detect and confirm inaccurate information spreading on social and mainstream media.

The authorities have urged citizens to depend solely on official announcements, helpline contacts, and verified aid information.

Individuals have also been urged not to share unverified posts as misleading information persists on social media.
