Iran refused to return to the United States for nuclear program talks. Let’s learn more about it !

The Trump administration has sanctioned Iran, including its oil network, as part of his "maximum pressure" program.

Trump threatened military action in a letter if Iran did not negotiate the nuclear deal.Iran will only talk with China, Russia, and Europe—the other JCPOA members—instead of the United States, the country's foreign minister declared.

Among Iran's pledges were to maintain its nuclear facilities (Fordow, Natanz, and Arak) for civilian use and refrain from producing highly enriched uranium or plutonium for use in nuclear weapons.

Centrifuge Restrictions: Iran limited the number, type, and capacity of its centrifuges and reduced its enriched uranium stockpile. Ninety percent of enriched uranium is utilized for bombs, five percent is used for nuclear power, and twenty percent is used for research or medical.

Verification and Monitoring: Iran consented to grant the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) complete access to all nuclear installations, including those that are not publicly disclosed.

The IAEA is given access to dubious locations by the A Joint Commission, which oversees the agreement's implementation and handles disagreements. U.S. sanctions on human rights, terrorism support, and ballistic missiles were not lifted, but the U.S., EU, and UN agreed to lift nuclear sanctions on Iran.

The United States lifted sanctions on oil shipments but kept financial transaction restrictions in place. The UN lifted its five-year arms and missile embargo on Iran after the IAEA confirmed that its nuclear operations were civilian.

Violation of the Deal: If any signatories feel that Iran is breaching the deal, the UN Security Council has the power to choose whether to provide sanctions relief. This "snapback" method has a ten-year timeframe, after which the UN sanctions are supposed to be permanently removed.

The Trump Withdrawal: Following President Trump's 2018 withdrawal of the United States from the accord, Iran resumed its nuclear activities.

Under the JCPOA, Iran's nuclear weapons development would be delayed for a minimum of a year, rather than a few months without the pact.

Prevent Regional Crisis: There are worries that Israel may take preventive military action in response to Iran's nuclear development, or that it may start a regional nuclear arms race.

Negotiation Challenges

  • US-Iranian mistrust: Past betrayals impede diplomatic development.
  • Conflicting Interests: The US seeks a more comprehensive agreement, while Iran wants to restore the JCPOA.
  • Domestic Political Restrictions: Compromise is opposed by hardliners in both nations.
