What is this?

The OIC is a multinational organization that embodies the unified perspective of the Muslim community on global matters.

Founded on: 25 September 1969 in Rabat, Morocco.

Main office: Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Membership:

57 countries spanning four continents.

India does not belong to the OIC.

Goals:

  • Encourage Islamic unity among member nations.
  • Protect the welfare of the Muslim community.
  • Promote global peace and unity.
  • Abolish discrimination against Muslims worldwide.
  • Assist in resolving conflicts among member nations.

History:

1969: Established following the Al-Aqsa incident.

1970: The inaugural meeting of foreign ministers took place in Jeddah, establishing a permanent secretariat.

1972: Initial OIC Charter ratified.

2008: Current Charter established at the 11th Islamic Summit in Dakar to update the OIC’s function.

Functions:

Serves as a unified platform for countries with a Muslim majority.

Holds consultative status with the United Nations.

Tackles concerns such as Palestine, counter-terrorism, poverty alleviation, climate change, and human rights.

Executes the OIC-2025 Ten-Year Action Plan emphasizing 18 key areas with 107 objectives.
