India's patent applications have more than doubled, its design submissions have more than tripled, and its trademarks have expanded 2.5 times in just a decade.

International IP Rights Treaties and Protocols (IPR) filing WIPO is responsible for administering the 1970 Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), an international accord with 158 Contracting States, including India.

It simultaneously looks for patent protection for an invention in each of the participating countries by filing a single international patent application.

The Madrid System, which is administered by WIPO and utilized for trademark registration and maintenance worldwide, was established by the 1989 Madrid Protocol for Trademark Registration.

It has 115 members, including India, and covers 131 countries. International Industrial Design Registration, Hague Agreement 1925: The establishment of the Hague System makes it possible for industrial designs to be protected across borders. This does not include India.
