India co-led a prominent meeting of the Group of Friends for Accountability concerning Crimes Against Peacekeepers
History of United Nations Peacekeeping
UN Peacekeeping started in 1948 with the formation of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) in the Middle East to oversee ceasefires.
It originally concentrated on nonviolent observation and mediation.
Throughout the Cold War, activities were restricted because of worldwide political conflicts.
Post-Cold War, peacekeeping grew considerably, featuring multidimensional missions focused on civil conflicts, governance assistance, human rights safeguarding, and humanitarian initiatives.
Contemporary missions prioritize the protection of civilians, inclusion of gender perspectives, and collaboration with regional entities.
What does UN Peacekeeping entail?
UN Peacekeeping serves as an essential tool employed by the United Nations to uphold worldwide peace and security.
The Blue Helmets, or UN Peacekeepers, derive their name from the light blue color of the UN flag. In 1947, the UN chose this color because blue represents peace, whereas red is frequently associated with war. This light blue hue has since turned into a symbol of the UN.
It works in conjunction with other UN initiatives, such as conflict prevention, peacemaking, peace enforcement, and peacebuilding.
India's Role in UN Peacekeeping
India boasts a rich and notable history in UN peacekeeping, originating from its involvement in the UN mission in Korea in 1953.
India’s dedication to non-violence, rooted in its beliefs and advocated by Mahatma Gandhi, is in harmony with the UN’s efforts to foster worldwide peace.
This dedication arises from India’s age-old concept of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (the entire world is my family), highlighting the unity of humanity and the significance of harmonious living.
Since the 1950s, India has deployed over 290,000 peacekeepers to over 50 missions globally, establishing itself as the largest contributor to UN peacekeeping initiatives.
Currently, more than 5,000 Indian soldiers participate in nine of the eleven ongoing missions, frequently in perilous and hostile areas, committed to maintaining international peace and security.
Problems and Worries
While serving in hazardous regions, UN peacekeepers are subject to severe threats and violence, but the majority of crimes against them go unpunished.
International peace efforts are hampered by this lack of accountability.
Since 1948, hostile acts have resulted in the deaths of over 1,000 peacekeepers, according to UN data.
Over 300,000 peacekeepers have been sent by India, one of the biggest donors to UN missions; 182 of them have lost their lives while serving.
Way Ahead India's strong commitment to international peace, security, and multilateralism is demonstrated by its participation in UN peacekeeping.
Calling accountability a strategic necessity for the success of international peacekeeping missions, India recently reaffirmed its strong commitment to ensuring justice for crimes committed against UN peacekeepers.
