The Madleen is a humanitarian vessel transporting relief supplies to Gaza in the context of the ongoing Israeli blockade.

Organised By: The Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), a worldwide civil society network that advocates against the Israeli blockade.

Objective: To provide essential items such as medical kits, baby food, water filters, and prosthetics to Gazans affected by war.

Who Was on Board?

There were 12 unarmed international volunteers, including climate activist Greta Thunberg, MEP Rima Hassan, and journalists from France, Spain, and Brazil.

What Occurred?

The ship departed from Catania, Italy on June 1, 2025.

Israel intercepted the ship in international waters and deported all activists, including Thunberg.

About the Mavi Marmara Incident:

What Is It?

This incident involved a six-ship flotilla that aimed to deliver 10,000 tonnes of aid to Gaza, defying Israel’s naval blockade.

When: On May 31, 2010.

Aim: To contest the legality of the blockade and to deliver humanitarian assistance, including medical supplies, school kits, and generators.

What Occurred?

Israeli commandos assaulted the Mavi Marmara in international waters, employing helicopters and warships.

Established In: The coalition was formed in 2010, following the deadly Israeli raid on the Mavi Marmara.

Objectives:

To end the blockade of the Gaza Strip imposed by Israel through direct civil resistance.

To raise global awareness regarding the humanitarian crisis in Gaza through nonviolent direct action.
