The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) published the yearly document “Statistical Report on Value of Output from Agriculture and Allied Sectors (2011-12 to 2023-24)” from the National Statistics Office (NSO)

Statistical Analysis of Agriculture and Related Sectors

This extensive document contains detailed tables showing the output values of Crop, Livestock, Forestry & logging, and Fishing & aquaculture sectors in Agriculture & allied activities from 2011-12 to 2023-24, presented at both current and constant (2011-12) prices.

Main Points

Total Expansion: Gross Value Added (GVA) at current prices increased by 225%, rising from ₹1,502 thousand crore in 2011–12 to ₹4,878 thousand crore in 2023–24.

Gross Value of Output (GVO) at constant prices rose by 54.6%, from ₹1,908 thousand crore to ₹2,949 thousand crore.

Fishing & Aquaculture Share increased to 7.0% (up from 4.2%) swiftly rising.

Crop Sector Insights: Cereals and Fruits & Vegetables made up 52.5% of overall crop GVO, with Paddy and Wheat accounting for 85% of cereal GVO.

Statistical Analysis of Agriculture and Related Sectors

Condiments & Spices: Leading State Madhya Pradesh (19.2%) succeeded by Karnataka (16.6%) and Gujarat (15.5%).

Livestock Sector: GVO increased from ₹488 to ₹919 thousand crore.

Milk remains the leader, yet its share dropped from 67.2% to 65.9%.

Meat share rose from 19.7% to 24.1%.

Fishing & Aquaculture: Contribution rose from 4.2% in 2011-12 to 7.0% in 2023-24.

The proportion of inland fish has dropped from 57.7% to 50.2%, while the portion of marine fish has risen from 42.3% to 49.8% from 2011-12 to 2023-24.

Notable changes in GVO (at constant prices) in Fisheries have been noted in the two primary contributing states of West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh.

Government Programs

Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN): Launched in 2019, PM-KISAN is a central sector program aimed at providing financial assistance to land-holding farmers, with certain exclusions.

Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY): Initiated in 2016, it aims to offer a straightforward and cost-effective crop insurance solution to guarantee complete risk protection for farmers' crops against all unavoidable natural hazards.

Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF): The amount of Rs. 1 lakh crore under the initiative will be allocated from FY 2020-21 to FY 2025-26, and the assistance under the initiative will be offered for the period from FY 2020-21 to FY 2032-33.

National Beekeeping and Honey Mission (NBHM): This is a Central Sector Scheme initiated in 2020 as part of Atma Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyan aimed at the comprehensive promotion and advancement of scientific beekeeping to fulfill the objective of “Sweet Revolution.”

Namo Drone Didi: It is a Central Sector Scheme that will run from 2024-25 to 2025-26.

The initiative seeks to offer drones to 15,000 chosen Women Self Help Groups (SHGs) for delivering rental services to farmers for agricultural needs (such as applying fertilizers and pesticides).

Soil Health Card (SHC): Delivers data to farmers regarding the nutrient condition of their soil, accompanied by suggestions on suitable nutrient application rates to enhance soil health and fertility.

National Mission on Edible Oil (NMEO)-Oil Palm (NMEO-OP): Initiated in 2021 to encourage oil palm farming to achieve self-sufficiency in edible oils for the nation.

e-NAM (National Agricultural Market): A nationwide electronic trading platform that connects APMCs.

Seeks clear and competitive pricing for farmers.

National Livestock Mission (NLM): Emphasizes enhancing breeds, developing fodder, and promoting entrepreneurship in livestock.

Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY): Holistic advancement of the fisheries industry emphasizing infrastructure, processing, and export activities.

In conclusion

Agriculture and related industries are essential to India's ecological sustainability, social justice, and economic resilience. They do more than just produce food.

In order to achieve the SDGs, guarantee inclusive growth, and make India Atmanirbhar (self-reliant), these sectors must be strengthened.
