Biofuels, which come from organic sources like biomass and organic waste, are a type of renewable energy fuel. These can be broadly divided into three categories: solid biomass, biogas (such as bio-LNG and bio-CNG), and liquid biofuels (such as ethanol, biodiesels, and bio-methanol).
India is on course to reach 20% ethanol blending in gasoline, five years ahead of its initial 2030 objective, having already reached 19.6% as of January 2025.
Significance of Biofuels Meeting Energy Demand: Over 25% of the rise in net worldwide primary energy demand between 2017 and 2040 comes from India.
Impact on the Environment: The promotion of biofuels assisted in replacing 173 lakh metric tons of crude oil and lowering CO2 emissions by 519 lakh metric tons.
Energy Security: The ethanol blending program has saved Rs. 85,000 crore in foreign exchange and decreased reliance on imports. The circular economy makes circularity possible by using waste to generate money and provide broader societal advantages.
Rural development creates a market for agricultural waste and leftovers to give farmers more financial incentives.
Obstacles in the manufacture of biofuel
Feedstock challenges include a fragmented and intricate waste supply chain, a lack of high-quality feedstock, and competing feedstock demands that impact food security.
Technological: The manufacturing of advanced biofuel has little commercial feasibility.
Funding: Uncertain profit margins and a high capital expenditure demand.
Important Projects: Galvanizing Organic Bio-Agro Resources Dhan (GOBARdhan), the Pradhan Mantri JI-VAN Yojana, the SATAT Scheme on Compressed Bio Gas, and the National Policy on Biofuels 2018 are a few examples.
