The milestone reflects the rapid adoption of electric buses in Tier-1 and Tier-2 cities, driven by FAME-II incentives and state EV policies, supporting clean and sustainable urban mobility

The Ministry of Road Transport has announced that over 60% of city buses in major urban centers are now electric, marking a significant achievement in India’s transition to sustainable public transport. The growth has been accelerated by the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (FAME-II) scheme, coupled with supportive state-level policies, subsidies, and infrastructure development.
Under FAME-II, incentives were provided for the purchase of electric buses, development of charging infrastructure, and adoption of energy-efficient technologies. State governments also played a key role by implementing dedicated EV policies, creating charging networks, and facilitating procurement by urban transport authorities.

Experts note that the shift to electric buses has multiple benefits. It significantly reduces urban air pollution and lowers carbon emissions, contributing to India’s climate action goals and Net Zero commitments. Additionally, electric buses offer lower operational costs, reduced dependence on fossil fuels, and quieter, cleaner urban transport, improving overall public health and commuter experience.
The transition also strengthens the domestic EV manufacturing ecosystem, supporting jobs, technology innovation, and supply chain development. By promoting large-scale adoption of electric buses, India is positioning itself as a leader in clean mobility solutions among emerging economies.
Challenges remain in scaling charging infrastructure, ensuring grid readiness, and managing battery life cycles. Continuous investment in renewable energy integration, public-private partnerships, and technological innovation will be critical for sustaining growth in the sector.
Overall, achieving 60% electric vehicle penetration in public transport represents a major milestone in India’s sustainable urban development journey. The initiative supports cleaner cities, enhances climate resilience, and accelerates the country’s transition to a green, low-carbon transport system.
