Regarding the All India Debt and Investment Survey (AIDIS):

What is it?

India’s main survey on household finances, addressing debt, assets, and investments in both rural and urban households.

Source & Publisher:

Started as the All India Rural Credit Survey (1951-52).

Extended in 1961-62 to incorporate investment and urban areas.

Carried out by the National Statistics Office (NSO), MoSPI.

Goal / Targets:

Document the scope and characteristics of family debt.

Evaluate asset ownership and allocation to guide national accounting.

Supply information to RBI, MoSPI, and NITI Aayog regarding credit policy, financial inclusion, and studies on inequality.

Main Characteristics

Decadal Survey: Most recently performed in the 77th Round (2019) at the request of RBI.

Encompasses Rural and Urban Regions: Comprises both institutional and non-institutional financing sources.

Offers Detailed Data: Categorized by state, sector, income group, and asset type.

Supports Policy: Employed for structuring initiatives related to financial literacy, credit access, and asset development.

Regarding the Situation Assessment Survey (SAS) of Farming Families:

What is it?

A nationwide survey to assess the financial health of farmers and their families.

Source & Publisher:

Initially launched in 2003 during NSS rounds.

Extended in 2013 and reinforced in the 2019 phase.

Carried out by NSO (MoSPI) in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture.

Goal / Aims:

Evaluate the income, costs, and debt situation of agricultural households.

Monitor livelihood trends, agricultural and livestock output, availability of government programs, and crop insurance.

Guide agriculture and rural development strategies for equitable growth.

Main Characteristics:

Includes all agricultural households: encompassing those without land involved in farming.

Tracks Credit Availability: Institutional funding, agricultural loans, and insurance protection.
