The Finance Minister has presented the amended Income Tax Bill, 2025 in the Lok Sabha, reflecting the majority of the 566 suggestions put forth by the Parliamentary Select Committee

A new law aims to unify, simplify, and update India’s direct tax system, replacing the 1961 Income Tax Act that has been in place for over sixty years.
Objective:

Streamline compliance by eliminating obsolete regulations and enhancing the clarity of the wording.
Improve clarity in tax management.
Integrate stakeholder feedback for more equitable tax policies.
Promote simplicity in business operations with clear, uniform, and contemporary legal terminology.
Main Aspects of the Amended Legislation:
Unified ‘Tax Year’ Term: Substitutes “Previous Year” and “Assessment Year” with a consistent label to enhance clarity and compliance.
Simplified Refund Rules: Refunds permitted even if ITR is submitted past the deadline, lessening taxpayer complaints.
Corporate & MSME Assistance: Rs 80M deduction for inter-corporate dividends reinstated and MSME definition synchronized with MSME Act for consistency.
Streamlined Property Taxation: Hypothetical rent on unoccupied property eliminated; distinct deductions for local tax and interest on leased property.

Compliance & Governance Reform: Superfluous clauses eliminated, CBDT authorized for digital-age regulation, and NIL-TDS option introduced for taxpayers with zero liability.
Charitable Trust & LLP Relief: Eased transfer pricing regulations and elimination of Alternate Minimum Tax for LLPs.
Improved Digital Consistency: Organized section numbering, refined terminology, and interconnected references for better navigation and diminished confusion.
