Central bank uses open market operations to ensure adequate liquidity and maintain financial stability

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has continued its liquidity support measures to stabilize financial markets amid ongoing global economic uncertainty. These efforts are aimed at ensuring that the banking system has sufficient funds to support lending, investment, and overall economic activity.
One of the primary tools used by the RBI is Open Market Operations (OMO), through which the central bank buys or sells government securities in the open market. In recent measures, the RBI has been purchasing government bonds to inject liquidity into the financial system. This infusion of funds helps banks maintain adequate cash reserves and continue providing credit to businesses and individuals.

Liquidity support plays a crucial role in maintaining the smooth functioning of the financial system. During periods of global uncertainty—such as fluctuations in oil prices, geopolitical tensions, and tightening financial conditions—banks may face constraints in accessing funds. By ensuring adequate liquidity, the RBI helps prevent disruptions in credit flow and supports economic stability.
These measures also contribute to stabilizing interest rates and bond yields. When the RBI purchases bonds, it increases demand for these securities, which can help moderate yields. Stable borrowing costs are important for both the government and private sector, as they influence investment decisions and economic growth.
For India, maintaining liquidity in the banking system is essential to sustain economic momentum. Adequate credit availability enables businesses to expand operations, supports job creation, and helps consumers access loans for housing, education, and other needs.
Experts note that proactive monetary policy measures by central banks are critical during uncertain global conditions. The RBI’s interventions not only ensure financial market stability but also reinforce investor confidence in the economy.
Overall, the continuation of liquidity support measures highlights the RBI’s commitment to maintaining a stable financial environment. By using tools such as open market operations, the central bank plays a key role in supporting economic growth and ensuring that financial institutions function efficiently even during periods of external stress.
