India will conduct its first comprehensive Household Income Survey in 2026

What is it?

A comprehensive Household Income Survey conducted throughout the country to produce strong and trustworthy information on income distribution in India for the first time.

Departments & Entities Engaged:

Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation (MoSPI)

National Sample Survey (NSS)

Technical Expert Group (TEG) directed by Dr. Surjit S. Bhalla.

Chronicle of Previous Attempts:

1950: NSS was founded and commenced extensive household surveys.

1955–1970: Experimental surveys were conducted in the 9th, 14th, 19th, and 24th rounds, but encountered underreporting challenges.

1983–84: Another pilot study on household income did not produce scalable outcomes.

Income projections consistently undershot real consumption and savings data, hindering comprehensive surveys.

Characteristics of the 2026 Survey:

Initial national survey exclusively aimed at household income distribution.

Monitored by the Technical Expert Group (TEG) to integrate worldwide best practices.

Concentrate on enhancing conceptual understanding, sampling frameworks, and estimation techniques.

Utilizes digital tools to enhance precision and assess the effect of technology on salaries and earnings.

Expands on MoSPI's recent advancements in statistics (surveys of the unincorporated sector, services sector, private capital investment, and tourism information).

Importance:

Addresses a vital data deficiency in comprehending India's changing income trends.

Delivers strong proof to influence welfare strategies and evaluate inclusive development.

Improves India's statistical system to align with international benchmarks.

Aids in efficient economic planning and focused fiscal measures.
