Bihar to replace ‘Fail’ on Class 10, 12 marksheets with ‘Eligible for Skill Training’

Bihar board exam results will no longer carry the word “Fail” for students who do not clear their Class 10 or Class 12 examinations, with the state government planning to replace it with “Eligible for Skill Training.”

Education Minister Mithilesh Tiwari announced the proposed change during a review meeting and said the relevant rules would be amended. The Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) will subsequently be instructed to adopt the revised terminology on marksheets.

The change is aimed at reducing the stigma associated with failing board examinations and encouraging students to consider vocational education and skill development as alternative pathways.

Students who do not pass the board examinations will be able to pursue skill-based training through the Bihar Board of Open Schooling and Examination (BBOSE).

The initiative is intended to provide students with an alternative route to continue their education and develop employable skills.

The Education Department has also planned one-month special classes for students appearing for the Matric supplementary examination. The classes will focus on additional academic preparation and help students improve their examination performance.

The state is also introducing activities beyond conventional classroom learning in government schools. Schools now observe “no-bag days” on Saturdays, allowing students to participate in activities such as theater, music and other creative programs.

For students in Classes 9 to 12, the government has introduced the “Vidya Saathi” app to facilitate academic interaction between students and teachers. The initiative is expected to involve around 75,000 teachers.

The Education Department is also scheduled to launch a Teacher Support Portal on Sept 5. As part of the initiative, the state plans to recognize one teacher from each district.
