Allahabad University clarifies how specialised History degrees are recognised

The University of Allahabad has published two notifications recognising specified History degrees as equivalent to graduate and postgraduate qualifications in History, bringing formal clarity to the titles of certain undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

The notifications were published on the university’s official website on Oct 17. The accompanying certificates are dated Oct 16 and are signed by the Controller of Examinations, according to the documents.

Under the undergraduate certificate, a BA degree in Ancient, Medieval or Modern History is recognised as equivalent to graduation with History.

The postgraduate certificate addresses MA degrees in Ancient History and Medieval and Modern History, recognising them as equivalent to an MA in History. The postgraduate notification also refers to specialisation, making the exact wording of the certificate important when assessing an individual qualification.

Relevance for recruitment and higher studies

The certificates may be relevant for graduates whose degree titles differ from the subject named in a recruitment notice, eligibility criteria or further-study requirement.

For example, a candidate holding a degree in Ancient History may need to establish that the qualification meets a requirement specifying History.

The university’s certificates provide formal documentation of the equivalence it recognises for the specified degrees. Candidates may be able to submit the relevant certificate when an employer, recruiting agency or educational institution asks them to clarify the relationship between their degree title and a History qualification.

However, the notifications should not be interpreted as automatically binding every external recruiting body, university or admissions authority.

Whether a particular certificate satisfies an eligibility condition will depend on the applicable recruitment rules, admission requirements and the decision of the authority concerned.

The documents also concern specified History qualifications. They should not be read as establishing blanket equivalence for every degree containing the word “History” or for unrelated subject combinations.

The University of Allahabad has listed the two notifications separately through its Controller of Examinations section, allowing candidates to consult the relevant document for their qualification.
