The Academic Council, chaired by VC Khatoon, decided on phased implementation, special concessions, and new revenue sources to ease the financial burden on students while addressing campus concerns.
Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has announced that fee hikes for current students will not exceed 20%, following days of campus protests against the proposed increases.
The decision came after a special online meeting of the Academic Council on Aug 14, chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof Naima Khatoon, which reviewed the earlier plan to raise fees for both new and existing students.
“The increase will be implemented in phases to reduce the immediate financial burden,” the official statement said.
The council also recommended support measures, including installment options and concessions for students from economically weaker backgrounds, to be overseen by the Dean of Students’ Welfare office.
To manage financial challenges, AMU plans to explore other revenue sources, including alumni contributions, sponsored research projects, renting out infrastructure for national-level examinations, and using campus facilities for training programs.
The vice chancellor's office also announced the upcoming convening of a Disciplinary Committee meeting in response to student requests.
It also confirmed that AMU Students’ Union elections will be held at a suitable time in line with Lyngdoh Committee guidelines.
