Beginning with academic session 2024, transgender students will receive free education from the Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University (BAOU) of Ahmedabad. The university aspires to draw in more transgender students, as it currently has quite a few enrolled with this outstanding initiative.
The university has been assisting the education of many groups, including transgender people, through its center for equitable chances and inclusive education, named Atri.
However, this will be the first time it offers free education to community members.
“The university made its decision because it valued inclusivity in society. We currently have about 100 community-based students. We made the decision to set up the space in order to welcome more transgender students to our university," said Prof. Ami Upadhyay, the vice chancellor of BAOU.
“The university has long been involved in community service. In addition to offering support via Atri, the institution has been putting on a talent hunt program to provide transgender students with a stage on which to display their talents,” she continued.
The majority of students enrolled at the institution are doing certificate and diploma programs. A few enroll in degree programs as well, whereas a significant proportion of transgender students choose the humanities courses.
