The capital city began the new year with a chilly morning as temperature dipped to 8°C, while the air quality worsened to the ‘poor’ category with AQI levels reaching 278.

The country's apex court criticized the Delhi government and Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for failing to adequately address the national capital's garbage crisis, calling it "shameful" that 3,000 tons of waste remains untreated daily.

The air quality has worsened across the country in fact, with as many as 67 Indian cities recording an AQI above 200. Delhi leads with 445, followed by Gurugram, Ghaziabad and Noida. Bengaluru remained the city with the cleanest air with an AQI of 92.

After seeing a slight improvement in air quality earlier this month, pollution levels have risen drastically in the national capital and surrounding satellite towns, forcing all schools to shift to hybrid learning depending on the availability of resources like the internet and laptops. Workplaces will reduce on-site staff to 50%, with remote work encouraged for public sector employees.

As schools in the national capital return to hybrid mode, the Supreme Court has called for comprehensive pollution control efforts across India, directing the central government to compile a list of the country's most polluted cities.

Strong winds and low moisture levels have led to improved air quality in Delhi-NCR this December, with clear skies and minimal fog aiding pollutant dispersion.

The minimum temperatures in national capital’s Pusa and Ayangar areas reached 3.2°C and 3.8°C respectively on Dec 12. The minimum temperature did not drop below 4.9°C in December 2023 and 2022, according to Indian Meteorological Department.
