Suspect with arsenal, alleged manifesto sparks panic at high-profile White House Correspondents’ gathering as security rushes US President to safety.

A 31-year-old man accused of opening fire at a high-profile Washington dinner attended by US President Donald Trump has been charged with attempting to assassinate the President, in a case that has reignited fears of political violence in the United States.
Federal prosecutors told a Washington court that the suspect, Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California, carried out a planned attack at the annual White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner — a marquee gathering of journalists, lawmakers and senior officials. If convicted, Allen could face life imprisonment.

Allen was brought into a federal courtroom in Washington in a blue jail-issued outfit, his hands cuffed behind his back as US Marshals escorted him in. He remained largely silent during the brief hearing, responding only to say he holds a master’s degree in computer science.
Prosecutor Jocelyn Ballantine described the allegations in stark terms, telling the court that Allen had “attempted to assassinate the President of the United States.”
US Magistrate Judge Matthew Sharbaugh ordered that Allen remain in custody, with a further hearing scheduled later this week to decide whether he will be held without bail pending trial. Defense lawyer Tezira Abe noted that her client has no prior criminal record.
Investigators say Allen arrived in Washington carrying multiple weapons, including a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun and three knives. He now faces additional federal charges, including illegally transporting a firearm across state lines and discharging a weapon during a violent crime.
According to court filings, Allen allegedly sent messages to family members referring to himself as the “Friendly Federal Assassin,” outlining plans to target senior officials linked to the Trump administration. Authorities believe the president may have been among his intended targets.
Documents also show that Allen booked a room at the Washington Hilton hotel, the venue hosting the event, and travelled from California by train in the days leading up to the shooting.
The gunfire shattered the formal calm of the black-tie evening. Witnesses described moments of confusion and fear as attendees dove under tables while security personnel moved swiftly to evacuate senior officials.
Trump, who was scheduled to address the gathering, was rushed off stage as shots rang out.
An FBI affidavit states that Allen breached a security checkpoint carrying a long gun before being confronted by a Secret Service officer. In the ensuing chaos, an agent was shot in the chest but survived thanks to a ballistic vest.
While officials described the suspect’s capture as a success for law enforcement, the incident has once again raised concerns about the growing threat of political violence in the US.
Trump has previously survived two assassination attempts during the 2024 presidential campaign, adding to the heightened security environment surrounding him.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said such violence “has no place in civil life,” while prosecutors signaled that additional charges against Allen could follow.
Allen was taken to a local hospital for evaluation after the incident and is expected to face further court proceedings in the coming days.
