Starmer and Trump to discuss foreign affairs and investment after state-visit pomp

British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and US President Donald Trump will turn from pageantry to policy as they meet after a day of royal pomp, with their talks set to centre on foreign affairs and major investments.

The meetings follow Trump’s second official state visit to the United Kingdom, which included a carriage procession with King Charles III and a state banquet at Windsor Castle.

The pair is scheduled to meet at Starmer’s country residence, Chequers, for discussions expected to span technology, trade, security, and geopolitical tensions.

A highlight announced ahead of the meeting is a £150 billion US investment package into the UK, with pledges covering critical sectors like technology, energy, and life sciences.

Major US tech companies including Microsoft, Nvidia, Google, and OpenAI are reported to have committed around £31 billion of the total towards AI, quantum computing, and nuclear energy initiatives.

Starmer is expected to use the visit to project a narrative of international partnership, showing that the UK continues to be a destination for global investment under his leadership. He has sought to strengthen the “special relationship” with the US, particularly after Trump returned to power in January.

However, the agenda is not without potential friction points. Sensitive issues such as the Ukraine war and the Israel-Gaza conflict are expected to arise.

Trump has reportedly made mixed signals: condemning Russia’s aggression while pushing Europe to cut imports of Russian oil, and expressing criticism of some European countries’ stance on recognizing Palestine.

Media scrutiny will also focus on other controversies. Among them is the recent dismissal of the UK’s ambassador to the US, Peter Mandelson, in connection with revelations about his ties to Jeffrey Epstein — an issue that could loom over the star-power event.

In addition to the geopolitical conversations, both leaders are expected to address trade-related concerns, including steel and aluminium tariffs. While the investment commitments mark a major win for Starmer, there appears to be little headway on tariff reductions as of now.

As leaders prepare for a joint press conference, the mixture of diplomacy, economics, and royal ceremony underscores the multifaceted purpose of Trump’s visit: to reaffirm US-UK ties, secure substantial investment, and navigate global challenges in a divided world.
