Nepal’s law and parliamentary affairs minister Padma Chaudhary said the country is on track to conduct its planned local, provincial and federal elections on schedule, with preparations progressing and security arrangements in place to support free and fair voting.

Nepal is set to conduct its local, provincial and federal elections in a timely and orderly fashion, the country’s minister for law, justice and parliamentary affairs, Padma Chaudhary, said on Feb 26, underscoring the government’s commitment to strengthening democratic processes.
The announcement comes as Nepal intensifies preparations for what are being described as some of the most significant polls in its recent political history.

Chaudhary, addressing reporters after a government meeting, affirmed that electoral preparations were progressing smoothly and that the authorities were focused on ensuring that the multi-tiered elections are completed within the scheduled timeframe. “We are making all necessary arrangements to hold free, fair and timely elections at all levels,” she said.
Nepal is preparing to hold simultaneous elections for local bodies, provincial assemblies and the federal parliament, a process that has been delayed in the past and is now viewed as a milestone in the country’s democratic evolution.
Political leaders and analysts in Kathmandu have described the polls as historic because they will be the first to take place under newly restructured federal governance frameworks implemented after Nepal’s transition from a monarchy to a federal democratic republic.
The minister noted that the election schedule has been coordinated with relevant state institutions, including the Election Commission of Nepal, security agencies and administrative officials, to address logistical and security challenges across the country’s diverse terrain.
She expressed confidence that all arrangements, from voter lists to polling station staffing, are progressing in line with the constitutional timelines.
Chaudhary emphasised the importance of security arrangements for the elections, noting that officials have been in close consultation with law enforcement and local administrations to maintain peace and public confidence during the polling process.
She stressed that democratic engagement and voter participation are key priorities and that efforts are being made to ensure a conducive environment for citizens to exercise their franchise.
While specific dates for the polls were not announced by the minister during her remarks, she indicated that a formal timeline would be made available in due course once the Election Commission finalises relevant preparations.
Observers say the elections are expected to draw substantial public interest given the evolving nature of Nepal’s federal structure and past challenges in holding multi-level polls.
Successfully completing the elections within the stipulated period would be viewed as a demonstration of Nepal’s democratic maturity and institutional resilience.
Political parties have also started gearing up for campaigning, with leaders touring various provinces and engaging with voters on local and national issues, ranging from development priorities to governance reforms.
The minister reiterated that the government remains committed to upholding democratic norms, and assured citizens that all mechanisms are being put in place to support a smooth election process.
