Iran's Araghchi calls Jaishankar, urges BRICS role amid escalating West Asia war

India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held a fresh telephonic conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi as the war involving Iran, Israel, and the United States continues to intensify across West Asia.

During the call, Araghchi briefed the Indian minister on the evolving situation following the recent US-Israeli strikes on Iranian targets and Tehran’s subsequent response. He emphasised Iran’s position that the attacks have serious consequences for regional stability and global security.

The Iranian minister also stressed that BRICS should play a greater role in addressing the crisis. Highlighting the grouping’s importance as a platform for multilateral cooperation, he said the bloc could contribute constructively toward maintaining regional and international stability during the ongoing conflict.

According to diplomatic readouts, Araghchi reiterated Iran’s determination to exercise what it described as its “legitimate right to self-defence” against attacks carried out by the US and Israel.

Jaishankar, in response, emphasised the importance of dialogue and regional stability and conveyed India’s readiness to strengthen bilateral and multilateral cooperation through international platforms.

The latest conversation marks the fourth phone call between the two foreign ministers since the outbreak of the Iran-US-Israel conflict, reflecting New Delhi’s active diplomatic engagement with Tehran amid rapidly evolving developments in the region.

India has been closely monitoring the situation given its strategic interests in the Gulf, including energy supplies and maritime trade routes. The escalating conflict has raised concerns over the security of shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant share of global oil shipments passes.

The diplomatic outreach between the two countries comes as India seeks to maintain a balanced approach in the crisis, engaging with multiple stakeholders while calling for stability and de-escalation in the wider Middle East region.
