Missions to remain fully operational as New Delhi flags extremist activity and strains ahead of Dhaka’s parliamentary polls.

India has decided to withdraw the families of its diplomats and officials posted in Bangladesh, citing heightened security concerns in the neighboring country, weeks ahead of Bangladesh’s parliamentary elections.
Official sources said on January 20 that the move is a precautionary measure in view of the prevailing security situation. “Given the security situation, we have advised the dependents of our officials in the high commission and other posts to return to India,” sources were quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

India’s high commission in Dhaka, along with its consulates in Chattogram, Khulna, Rajshahi and Sylhet, will continue to remain open and fully functional, the sources clarified.
According to PTI, New Delhi has also decided to designate Bangladesh as a ‘non-family’ posting for Indian diplomats and officials, citing safety concerns following a reported rise in extremist activities in the country. Pakistan is already classified as a non-family destination for Indian officials.
India has repeatedly raised concerns over attacks on minorities in Bangladesh, particularly members of the Hindu community.
Bilateral ties have come under strain since the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus assumed power following the collapse of the Sheikh Hasina-led government in August 2024. The latest decision underscores New Delhi’s growing unease over internal developments in Bangladesh as it prepares for national elections.
