Liton Chandra Das, 60, a sweet shop owner bludgeoned with shovel in Kaliganj; fresh incidents reignite fears over lawlessness and minority safety.

A 60-year-old Hindu trader was beaten to death by a mob in Bangladesh’s Kaliganj area after a minor argument with customers escalated into a brutal assault, adding to a growing list of mob violence incidents that have triggered fear and outrage across the country.
The victim, Liton Chandra Das, owned a small hotel and sweet shop in the locality. The incident unfolded on January 17 morning, when a customer got into an argument with Ananta Das, an employee at Liton’s shop. As tensions flared, Liton intervened to shield his staff member, but soon found himself at the centre of the attack.

Eyewitness accounts suggest that a group of customers turned violent, punching and kicking Das before striking him repeatedly with a shovel. He suffered grievous injuries and collapsed at the scene, dying before local residents could come to his aid.
The killing sparked unrest in the area, prompting swift police intervention. Law enforcement officials rushed to the spot, brought the situation under control and detained three people in connection with the assault. Das’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and police say a detailed investigation is underway.
Residents of the locality have expressed panic and anger over the incident, demanding a fair probe and strict legal action against those responsible.
The killing comes amid a series of violent incidents reported across Bangladesh in recent months. In a separate case, a fuel station worker, Ripon Saha, was crushed to death after attempting to stop a vehicle from fleeing without paying for fuel. According to a PTI report, a black SUV refuelled at the Karim Filling Station and tried to escape without settling a bill of ₹3,710. When Saha intervened, the vehicle allegedly ran him over.
Police have arrested Abul Hashem alias Sujan (55), a former treasurer of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Rajbari district, along with his driver Kamal Hossain (43), in connection with the incident.
These episodes are part of a disturbing pattern of mob violence in Bangladesh, particularly targeting minorities, following the death of anti-India radical student leader Sharif Osman Hadi. On December 18, garment factory worker Dipu Chandra Das was lynched and set on fire over allegations of blasphemy. Days later, Amrit Mondal, described as a top-tier criminal, was beaten to death by a mob in Rajbari district over alleged extortion charges.
Together, the incidents have intensified concerns over vigilante violence, breakdown of law and order, and the safety of vulnerable communities in the country.
